Tulum Mayan Ruins

This morning, I got up and got ready for my Tulum Mayan ruins tour. The tour group assembled early at 7:15, so I got some breakfast and headed down to the group. Luckily not so many people were on the tour (just 22 of us), and we headed out to get on board another boat for a ferry ride. This boat was rocking so much that when we got in, we had a small orientation of what we were doing, and they immediately started passing out bags. It got me a little nervous, because I hadn’t brought any ginger pills with me, and it was feeling really stuffy in the boat. As soon as the ‘orientation’ was over, I asked if I could go upstairs to the outside, and they let me while most everyone else stayed in the first deck. Upstairs was beautiful, sunny, warm, with a great breeze, and I had no issue with the rocking of the boat. I think a few people got sick, and I’m not surprised because being couped up in the first stuffy floor with other people getting sick seemed absolutely terrifying.. not sure why no one else really came outside for the fresh sea air.

We then arrived and walked to a bus station where we boarded a bus to take us to the ruins. It was cool to get out of the touristy area and see some real streets, stores, etc, however I guess most of the area is actually touristy anyhow. We arrived at the ruins and were brought into the grounds where these old Mayan templates were built within a protected wall (Tulum). It housed about 300 higher society people like astronomers, mathematicians, and the dieties. Overall, it was a great trip out to see these ruins, and take in the beautiful weather, scenery, and culture!

After a ways back to the ship, we all met up and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon basking in the sun aboard the ship.

Costa Maya and Halloween Onboard!

This morning, we arrived at Costa Maya just after lunch. It made for a nice schedule because we turned our clocks back to match Mexico’s time, so we gained an hour! After a great breakfast complete with eggs, waffle, pancake, French toast and fruit, I got ready to head down to the meetup for my dolphin swim group. They took us off the ship and over to the port terminal where we literally walked by shops and simply went right to the dolphin pool. There we got some training of signals to make the dolphins kiss us, pet them, hug them, ride on them, and touch our hands tall out of water. We then made our way down to a pool next to the ocean where you could do these activities with the dolphins. I was excited to touch a dolphin finally, and actually have one pull me along in the water!

There were 11 of us in the group and the trainer managed to get everyone doing various turns with the dolphins while sending another dolphin to all of us waiting for one-on-one time to keep us entertained by letting us pet them. It was pretty well organized, and while a bit pricey, was really fun to feel them and see them so up close. When it was my turn to swim down to the end of the pool, the dolphin quickly swam to me, picked me up and let me hold on to its fins as he swam upside down in the water and pulled me back to the other side. The strength with which he pulled me was pretty incredible, and I just wanted to swim longer distances and be pulled through the water like this!

After the dolphin swim, I changed and went around the shops looking at items. Today was Halloween and they oddly planned the costume kids party around 4:30 and we had til 5:30 on shore. Since there wasn’t much to do at port, after some shopping and bargaining, I got another mask for $25 (down from $65—ridiculous) and headed back to the ship. It’s been fun to see everyone get dressed up, but we have our formal dinner tonight so we have to dress nicely for dinner, then we can don our costumes for the adult costume party later tonight.

It was incredible. I’ve never eaten s much food in my life. And the amazing part of it is for just $20, you have an incredible menu, and you can order as much of it as you like. By the end of the meal, I counted our dishes that we’d ordered, AND finished, and we had 14! Some were small portions/plates, but still, 14 amazing dishes between the two of us was quite an accomplishment!
I got dressed up as the matador, and we headed down to the restaurant to see our friends since we had an amazing dinner at Palo. There we sat with Luis, Claudia and the kids, and it was cute to see everyone dressed up in the restaurant. We hung out for a bit and did pictures, then headed down to the adult costume party. Apparently as costumes walked in, they were handed some cards for specific groups such as ‘Scariest’ ‘Most Disney’ or ‘Funniest’… I didn’t receive a card, so I figured I wasn’t invited to the competition. However at the end, they announced that if anyone didn’t get a card and were dressed up, that we should go up and have the audience vote. That of course was embarrassing since so many of us went up. Luckliy, I’ve built some good social links on the ship so that when it was my turn to introduce myself as the matador Ben HA min, and whipped my red cape, the crowd roared. I was then put in the finalist selection with 3 other groups. As it got down to the final call, I was knocked out by the MC, to which the crowd cheered and demanded me to be called a winner as well. So it ended up being a 3 way tie with me, and the 2 other groups. I got a nice little Disney souvenir to bring home as a trophy. We then called it a night since we had tomorrow in Cozumel going ashore quite early.

Windsurfing, Well, Sort Of

Today I tried windsurfing. There wasn’t much wind, but I went out anyhow, and it was so difficult! Mainly the weight of the mast being brought up by myself trying to balance on this board that was shaking in the waves was actually quite difficult. So after many several failed attempts, I figured it was pointless at this point to try it anymore, since there was no wind.

Lazy Vacation Days

Today we totally just hung out and did nothing. It was great to not think of anything, and just watch videos, lie on the beach, swim, sunbathe, everything you could want from a relaxing vacation. This is what we wanted! In the evening, we went to the area of the region called Bay of Dreams to the restaurant the Giggling Marlin for dinner. We had a really good dinner and enjoyed the view watching the sunset behind the hills. It was really relaxing.

La Paz

Today we got up to go grocery shopping in La Paz. This was the nearest city to La Ventana, and had most modern things such as grocery stores, movie theaters, and fast food restaurants. It was quite hot and dry, and seeing the grocery store was heaven–I was so hungry! We did some sightseeing and looked around all at the shops. We spent the day just wandering around and made it back to the house for some dinner with our groceries. Andrew, his dad and I all played Hearts til night, and Andrew and I started Sex in the City, Season III.

Heading toward La Ventana

Today we headed to the pool in the morning to wait for Andrew’s dad to pick us up for our journey to La Ventana, the small town where he built a house. During the drive, we saw the rugged terrain of the area–it was just desert and cacti to both sides of us. I couldn’t believe how desolate it was and wondered if we had a flat tire, how long would it be before someone would pass along the road.

After a ways, we topped this mountain and came over to see the waterline run all the way down to the end of the land. It was really pretty, and Andrew’s dad pointed out where the beach was that his house was on. I couldn’t believe how far away he lived from things–it really was an old Mexican town perched on the side of the water. We arrived and unloaded our stuff in the house. It was a really nice with a red tiled roof, lots of windows, a garage, and your own private walkway down to the beach. He had done an excellent job on the design and materials used, and it seemed to be quite a nice retirement nest. We then headed into ‘town’, which was really a street that had a few houses on the side of it that seemed to double up as commercial use during the day, and had a good dinner. It was baked potato and shrimp, mixed with cheese.

Tropical Luxury

Today we woke up and had breakfast by the pool. We saw Rob & Todd and chatted for a bit before I headed to Subway to bring us some sandwiches back. We lounged at the pool eating our sandwiches and saw Renee & Jason, whom we both met on our transport van coming into our hotel. After basquing in the sun for the whole day, we all joined up and headed to Trailer Park #2 for dinner–we had shrimp, lobster, chicken–a huge feast, and for a huge price. We then went to Squid Roe and enjoyed a night of dancing and drinking. All in all, it was a fun, fun day!

Off to Cabo San Lucas!

Andrew and I started off our journey in the morning, with last minute shopping, eating, and packing. We went to the Oakland airport to board our Southwest jet down to Ontario California. The flight was fine, and when we landed in Ontario, we were faced with such a struggle trying to move from one terminal to the next. It is one of the most poorly designed airports, with no indications on how to go where and why. The weather was nice and warm, and I always think back to my internship in Ontario, and remember how nice having warm weather everyday was. Once we got to our right terminal, we tried to stuff Carl’s Jr. down our throats before boarding the AeroMexico flight down to Cabo. Needless to say, it was tough.

This flight, something really caused my ears to go haywire. It was awful, they were popping, squeaking, and all this hooplah. Finally we landed, went through customs, which consisted of a red light, we check you, green light, go through type of random searching. It was really funny–reminded me of something I’d see in Russia. After we got through, we went to a group taxi where we waited to go to our hotel. On board were different people from all over the US. Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, we all piled into the van for transport to the hotels. It turns out that we met Jason and Renée from SLC, and they turned out to be such a funny couple, and they too were staying at the Hotel Finnisterra.

Once we checked into the hotel, it was a struggle again to find our room. We found what we thought was the back sliding glass door. We were given key cards to get in, but there was no card reader. So we went around and around trying to find the front door, only to be told that that was indeed the front door, and we were given card keys by mistake. At that point, we went to change our room.

We then went to dinner at the hotel, and had a Mexican over-priced buffet. It’s sad that this part of Mexico has become so infested with foreigners, that the ‘median price’ for dinners was about $30. Even our subway sandwiches the next afternoon were $14. Anyhow, after dinner we went to downtown to check out the marina and the bars and stuff there. We met up with Todd and Rob, two guys from LA, and they too were staying at our hotel, so we made plans to sit at the pool with them the next day. We then wandered around and went back to the hotel for a nice sleep.
